Alphabetti Frogetti!
Hi Everyone, it's me, Alphabetti Frogetti!
Sheepdogs everywhere are good at counting – it’s part of their job! But I am especially good at letters and words – I am Alphabetti Frogetti!
I am Alphabetti Frogetti because I know my letters in the right order without having to say them all in my head, or write them all down first. I know that all the letters in the alphabet have a special place, and always go in a special order.
I’m sure you know what the alphabet is, but do you know it REALLY REALLY WELL? Are YOU Alphabetti Frogetti like me?
Last week we were in a book shop when a quite a big boy asked us where he could find a book he wanted. He didn’t know where to start looking.
So Bimmy explained that the books are on the shelves in ALPHABETICAL order. But if you want to find something that is in ALPHABETICAL order, you HAVE to know your ALPHABET!!
So that is one very good reason for learning your letters, and their special place in the queue, so you know without having to think TOO hard, that E is before G or N comes right after M and not before it.
So this is how it works in the bookshop or in the library: If you know the first letter of the author’s surname, you can go straight to that shelf to look. If you are looking for my books by Helen McGlasson, you have to think “M” for McGlasson. If you want a Paddington book by Michael Bond, you have to look for “B” for Bond, and if you were looking for Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl, you would look for “D”.
Can you put these names into ALPHABETICAL order?? Dahl, McGlasson, Bond.
Here’s another tricky thing! In libraries, the shelves have labels a bit like this:
A-E, F-J, K-O, P-T, U-Z
Where will you look for B for Bond?
Where will you look for D for Dahl??
Where will you look for M for McGlasson???
If you know your alphabet really well, you can work out all the letters in between, even if they are not on the list! Now THAT’S clever. THAT’S Alphabetti Frogetti!
So, are YOU Alphabetti Frogetti like me??
Next week, we’ll help you to Alphabetti Frogetti authors with names that begin with the same letter like Dodd, Donaldson and Dahl – youchers!!
